MULTIMEDIA RESEARCH

I am minoring in Media Arts + Practice at the School of Cinematic Arts in order to learn how to tell narratives across media. The curriculum enables me to creatively and effectively communicate my intended meanings through images, designs, video and research while opening the space for audience interaction and critique.

Specifically, I am pursuing my interest in themed entertainment and children's literature to motivate my projects.

Who Lives Happily Ever After?

I am studying the power of representation in children’s media, especially fairy tales, because I want to find out how corporations grapple with the demand for nostalgia and preserving tradition while trying to engage viewers in contemporary tales that reflect their modern culture. This will help my reader understand how the ability, or inability, for children to see themselves reflected in a story drives their interaction with it.

Behind the Gates of Magic

I am studying the emotional experience of visiting Disneyland in order to highlight the
disparity between those who can access the magic and those who cannot, whether that’s because
they aren’t able to afford the experience or because they are being exploited for their labor. This
will help viewers momentarily distance themselves from the fantasy and understand how
consumerism sacrifices human connection and the ability to notice who’s paying the price to
uphold these immersive illusions.

How Students are Building the Future of Themed Entertainment

The sky's the limit for student creativity. We have grown up with Disneyland and Universal Studios at the forefront of the theme park industry, but we are also seeing the rise of “indie” themed experiences, as smaller teams are contributing to audience-driven games and narratives. Specifically, student storytellers are harnessing their resources and using their imaginations to create personalized immersive experiences within their limited settings. From USC’s Themed Entertainment Association to Escape SC, today’s school organizations are educating members on how to be innovative, curious problem solvers in an industry that will test their creative limits and require them to think outside the box. The future of our theme park and escape room experiences rests in the hands of those making these adventures possible right on their own campus.

Introduction to Digital Media

I explore how representation in children’s media shapes how young audiences see themselves and understand the world. By examining the tension between nostalgia and adaptation, I illustrate the balance between preserving beloved stories and meeting contemporary demands for diverse, authentic representation. Ultimately, I argue that as storytelling technologies evolve and children shift from passive viewers to active participants, the power to imagine, enter, and reshape narratives opens possibilities for the stories we can create.
